Experts call 2025 a ‘turning point’ for Kashmir conflict

The Kashmir conflict is poised for a significant shift in 2025, with experts highlighting it as a critical year for advancing the cause of Kashmiri self-determination. The topic was discussed extensively during a webinar titled “Human Rights for All: Amplify Kashmir’s Voice to the World,” organized by Friends of Kashmir International on International Human Rights Day.
Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed, delivering the keynote address, emphasized the strategic importance of 2025, when Pakistan will assume an observer seat at the United Nations Security Council. He urged the Pakistani government, along with overseas Pakistanis and the Kashmiri diaspora, to seize this opportunity to amplify the Kashmir issue on global platforms and garner international backing.

Mishal Hussain Malik, Chairperson of the Peace and Culture Organization, shed light on the ongoing human rights violations in Indian-administered Kashmir. She highlighted the plight of her husband, Yasin Malik, who remains in Indian custody under dire conditions, and called for urgent international intervention.
Other speakers, including World Freedom Movement President Muzzammil Ayub Thakur, researcher Tayyaba Khurshid, and Hurriyat leaders Parvez Ahmed and Manzoor Shah, discussed oppressive Indian laws affecting the region. They emphasized the role of youth activism and the need for a unified strategy to address the conflict, asserting that lasting peace is contingent upon recognizing the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination.
Abdul Hameed Lone, Vice Chairman of Friends of Kashmir, reflected on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) adopted in 1948, describing it as a comprehensive framework for human rights. He lamented India’s failure to honor its international obligations, particularly the basic “Right to Life” for Kashmiris living under fear and oppression.
Friends of Kashmir International Chairperson Ghazala Habib concluded the session with a call for action. She proposed forming an action committee to elevate the Kashmir issue on global platforms and urged worldwide appeals for the release of political prisoners like Asiya Andrabi and Shabir Ahmad Shah. She also called on overseas Pakistanis and Kashmiris to play a decisive role in resolving the conflict in line with UN resolutions, stressing the urgency for justice and peace in the region.
