FBR reverses ban on bringing two mobile phones, $1,200 goods into Pakistan

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has suspended the implementation of proposed amendments to the Customs Baggage Rules 2006, effectively reversing a ban on bringing more than one mobile phone and goods exceeding $1,200 into Pakistan.

The decision, announced by FBR Chairman, follows orders to withdraw the proposed changes and reevaluate them through a consultative process before resubmission. Under the existing 2006 rules, travelers are allowed to bring in two mobile phones for personal use.

Earlier this week, the FBR issued a notification proposing strict amendments to the baggage scheme. These included a ban on commercial imports exceeding $1,200 and limiting travelers to a single mobile phone. The amendments aimed to curb commercial quantities of goods entering the country under the guise of personal baggage.

The chairman’s directive halts these restrictions for now, ensuring that the current allowances under the 2006 rules remain in effect. Sources indicate that the revisions will undergo further review to address concerns raised by stakeholders.
