FIA files cases against journalists and vloggers over alleged false claims during PTI protests

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has registered cases against several journalists and vloggers, accusing them of spreading false narratives against state institutions during Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) protests in Islamabad last month.
The cases have been filed under sections 9, 10, 11, and 24 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) at FIA’s Cybercrime Wing in Islamabad. Those named in the cases include prominent figures such as Harmit Singh, Ahmad Noorani, Abdul Qadir, Hasnain Rafiq, Salman Durani, Imran Khattana, Maryam Shafqat Malik, and Rizwan Ahmed Khan.

One of the FIRs publicly available pertains to journalist Harmit Singh. It accuses him of using his social media profile on platform “X” to promote what it describes as malicious propaganda against state institutions, particularly focusing on events between November 24 and 27, 2024. According to the FIR, Singh allegedly incited violence, instilled fear among citizens, and attempted to create discord between pillars of the state.
Other FIRs remain undisclosed, but journalist and YouTuber Salman Durani, also named in the cases, stated that he has not yet received any official notification or FIR against him.
As per FIA’s procedures, complaints are investigated after a notice is issued to the accused. Only after an inquiry is completed are formal charges filed.
Meanwhile, PTI has responded by releasing a list claiming that 38 of its workers were injured by gunfire and 139 others have gone missing during the protests. The party has also submitted related evidence and data to the courts, demanding legal action through an FIR filed under the supervision of Barrister Gohar.
The FIA claims the registered cases aim to address the dissemination of false narratives and incitement of public unrest through online platforms. Authorities allege that the accused sought to create fear and insecurity among the public while promoting division between state entities.
