Government to distribute free solar panels to 100,000 homes in Punjab: CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced a major renewable energy initiative on Sunday, revealing that 100,000 households across the province will receive free solar panels starting June 2025. The scheme targets families consuming an average of 200 units of electricity per month on a single meter, aiming to provide lasting relief from rising electricity bills.

Speaking at a press conference, the chief minister highlighted that the distribution process will be conducted through a balloting system. The free solar panel program, first introduced last year, has a budget allocation of Rs 10 billion and is expected to benefit thousands of households struggling with high energy costs.

Maryam Nawaz Sharif emphasized the program’s deadline, stating, “Today, January 5, is the last date for registration under the scheme.” She further explained that beneficiaries will receive either a 550-watt or an 1100-watt solar panel system, depending on their electricity usage.

The installation of solar panels will take place directly in the homes of the selected recipients, providing immediate cost savings on electricity bills. The chief minister encouraged eligible households to register for the scheme online through the official portal or via SMS.

The chief minister highlighted the importance of renewable energy in reducing household expenses. “The provision of solar panels will offer substantial relief to the public by significantly lowering their electricity bills,” she said. She also expressed her commitment to making Punjab a hub for renewable energy. “Our vision is to transform Punjab into a leader in renewable energy solutions,” she added.

In addition to the solar panel scheme, the chief minister shared plans to gradually convert agricultural tube wells to solar energy as part of the province’s broader green energy agenda.

Maryam Nawaz Sharif also announced two other major initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable transportation. She revealed that the government will distribute 100,000 e-bikes to students and introduce electric buses to modernize Punjab’s transport system.
