Govt announces all schools and colleges to remain close today (Dec 16)

In a gesture of remembrance and solidarity, the government has announced the closure of all public and private schools and colleges on December 16 to honor the martyrs of the tragic 2014 Army Public School (APS) Peshawar attack. The decision was communicated through multiple notifications issued by Islamabad’s Deputy Commissioner, Irfan Nawaz Memon along with district administrations of Lahore and Rawalpindi.

This annual observance marks the anniversary of one of Pakistan’s darkest days, when a terrorist attack on APS in Peshawar claimed the lives of over 140 individuals, most of them children. The tragedy left an indelible mark on the nation, uniting people in grief and a renewed resolve against terrorism.

The notification specifically applies to the federal capital, Lahore and Rawalpindi. By closing schools and colleges on this day, the government aims to foster awareness among students about the sacrifices made by their peers and educators during the horrific attack.

The decision is part of a broader effort to honor the memory of the victims and demonstrate national solidarity. Observing December 16 as a day of remembrance serves as a reminder of the resilience and courage of the APS community and the enduring spirit of the nation in the face of such adversity.

The APS Peshawar tragedy is widely regarded as a turning point in Pakistan’s fight against terrorism, prompting significant measures to strengthen national security. Each year, memorial ceremonies and tributes are held across the country to remember the young lives lost and to renew the collective commitment to peace and security.
