ICC to review controversial Kohli-Konstas shoulder bump at Boxing Day Test

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to review a controversial incident involving Indian batting star Virat Kohli and Australian debutant Sam Konstas during the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. The heated exchange, which occurred during a break between overs, has sparked widespread debate in the cricketing world.

The altercation unfolded as Konstas and Usman Khawaja were switching ends during Australia’s innings. Kohli, while walking toward Konstas, appeared to shoulder-bump the young Australian, who was seemingly distracted while adjusting his gloves. Camera footage suggests Kohli was fully aware of his trajectory, leading to questions about his intent.

The incident drew immediate attention from commentators and fans alike. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting remarked on Channel Seven that Kohli’s actions appeared deliberate. “Virat walked one whole pitch over to his right and instigated that confrontation. No doubt in my mind,” Ponting said, adding that match officials would likely take a serious view of the situation.

According to the ICC’s Code of Conduct, any inappropriate physical contact on the field is prohibited. If Kohli’s actions are deemed deliberate or reckless by match referee Andrew Pycroft, he could face Level Two sanctions, potentially resulting in three or four demerit points, fines, or suspension. Pycroft is expected to closely examine the footage and hear explanations from both players before delivering a verdict.

Speaking to Channel Seven after the second session, Konstas, who scored a confident 60 runs in his debut innings, downplayed the encounter, saying emotions were running high on both sides. “I didn’t quite realize what happened. I was doing my gloves, then a little shoulder charge, but it happens in cricket,” Konstas said.
