IHC to hear petition on ban of social media platform X on February 6, 2025

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has scheduled a hearing for the petition challenging the ban on the social media app X for February 6, 2025. Chief Justice Aamir Farooq will preside over the proceedings.

This petition, previously heard on April 17, 2024, has encountered numerous delays, with earlier hearing dates on May 2 and June 11, 2024, being postponed. In response to a miscellaneous application for an early hearing, the court accepted the request on November 22, 2024, and subsequently instructed that the case be listed following the winter vacations. The Registrar Office later confirmed the February hearing date.

Meanwhile, the Senate’s Standing Committee on IT and Telecom held a meeting on December 5, 2024, to address critical issues facing the country’s IT industry. During the discussion, Pasha Chairman Sajjad Mustafa Syed voiced serious concerns about the government’s VPN policy, emphasizing its detrimental effects on the sector.

“An hour of internet downtime results in a loss of $910,000 for the IT industry,” he highlighted, underlining the importance of uninterrupted internet access for the industry’s growth.

Senator Palwasha Khan, chairing the committee, expressed frustration over the Ministry of IT’s handling of responsibilities, accusing it of deflecting matters to the Ministry of Interior. “I don’t understand why we even have a Ministry of IT if this is how things are managed,” she remarked.

The Secretary of IT assured the committee that the government is striving to strike a balance between national security requirements and minimizing disruptions to the IT sector. “We are working to ensure that national security concerns are met with the least impact on the IT industry,” he said.
