IND vs AUS: India 51/4 in reply of Australia’s 445 as rain interrupts Brisbane Test on day 3

Rain played spoilsport on Day 3 of the ongoing Test match between India and Australia at The Gabba, halting play multiple times in the day’s final session. India, chasing a massive Australian total of 445, ended the day at 51/4, still trailing by 394 runs. KL Rahul (33*) and captain Rohit Sharma (0*) were unbeaten at the crease as the visitors faced an uphill battle.

India resumed the third session at 48/4, with Rahul and Sharma looking to stabilize the innings. However, rain interrupted proceedings early, allowing only three overs to be bowled in the session, during which India added just three runs. Persistent showers forced an early stumps call, leaving India in a precarious position.

In the second session, India showed glimpses of resistance as KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant attempted to build a partnership. Pant played aggressively, targeting loose deliveries, while Rahul produced the shot of the day with a textbook cover drive off Pat Cummins.

However, the partnership was short-lived as Cummins dismissed Pant (9) with a beautifully pitched delivery that found the edge, sending the ball into Alex Carey’s gloves. Rahul continued to fight, managing a boundary off Mitchell Starc before rain again disrupted play and forced an early tea break.

The day began with Australia at 445, thanks to late contributions from Mitchell Starc and Alex Carey. Jasprit Bumrah struck early, dismissing Starc after the batter had hammered a slog-sweep for six off Ravindra Jadeja. Bumrah forced an edge from Starc to give Rishabh Pant an easy catch.

Mohammed Siraj followed with the wicket of Nathan Lyon, breaking through his defense and hitting middle stump. With just one wicket remaining, Carey attempted an aggressive shot against Akash Deep but mistimed it, ending Australia’s innings.

India’s reply started disastrously as the Australian pacers wreaked havoc. Mitchell Starc removed Yashasvi Jaiswal (5) with a sharp delivery, after the young batter edged an attempted flick to Mitchell Marsh. Starc struck again to dismiss Shubman Gill (1), who edged a catch to Marsh.

Josh Hazlewood joined the attack, tempting Virat Kohli (3) to chase an outside-off delivery, resulting in another edge to the wicketkeeper. India’s batting struggles continued, with the visitors reduced to 51/4 by the end of the day.

Australia’s bowlers, led by Starc and Cummins, maintained relentless pressure, leaving India with the daunting task of overcoming a massive deficit. With two days remaining and rain potentially disrupting further play, India faces a monumental challenge to avoid another defeat.

Brief Score:

  • Australia 445 (Travis Head 152, Steven Smith 151; Jasprit Bumrah 6-76)
  • India 51/4 (KL Rahul 33*; Mitchell Starc 2-25).
