Maryam Nawaz launches free solar panel scheme for 100,000 households

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has inaugurated the CM Punjab Free Solar Panel Scheme, a landmark initiative to provide free solar systems to 100,000 households across the province. The scheme aims to offer relief from high electricity costs while promoting sustainable energy solutions.
At the launch event, the chief minister highlighted the significance of the program, emphasizing its focus on alleviating financial burdens and encouraging renewable energy adoption. “This scheme is a step towards reducing electricity bills and embracing sustainable energy for a better future,” she said.

Key Features of the Scheme
- Eligibility: Households consuming up to 200 units of electricity per month qualify for the free solar systems.
- System Allocation: Consumers using 100 units per month will receive a 550-watt solar system, while those using up to 200 units will be provided with a 1,100-watt system.
- Registration: Applications can be submitted online or via SMS to 8800. Applicants will need their electricity bill reference number and CNIC for verification.
- Distribution: Solar systems will be allocated through a computerized lottery system to ensure fairness.
A dedicated helpline will be available to assist applicants with registration and provide support throughout the process. To prevent theft, the solar panels and inverters will be linked to the users’ CNICs.
Environmental and Economic Impact
The scheme is expected to significantly benefit the province by reducing carbon emissions by 57,000 tons annually and lowering the federal government’s electricity subsidy burden. It also aims to provide long-term energy independence to Punjab households.
During the ceremony, the chief minister noted that over 7.3 million consumers in Punjab had already received electricity subsidies amounting to Rs14 per unit. She described the solar panel program as a vital addition to the government’s renewable energy and public welfare initiatives.
Applications for the scheme are now open, and eligible consumers are encouraged to apply promptly to take advantage of this opportunity.
