Military courts operate under parliamentary law: Tarar clarifies

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, reaffirmed that military court trials in Pakistan are conducted under an Act of Parliament and in accordance with legal frameworks, ensuring the right to a fair trial for all individuals.
In a video message, Tarar emphasized that the right to a fair trial remains intact in military court proceedings. Accused individuals have access to legal representation, family visits, and the opportunity to appeal verdicts both within the military judicial system and the relevant high courts. He asserted that Pakistan adheres to international laws and ensures there are no human rights violations in such trials.

The Minister explained that cases involving attacks on military installations, such as those during the May 9 incidents, fall under the jurisdiction of military courts. Comparing these trials to those conducted by specialized courts for specific crimes, he said, “Just as drug cases are tried in Anti-Narcotics Force courts and terrorism cases in Anti-Terrorism Courts, attacks on military installations are prosecuted in military courts.”
Tarar noted that the trials are based on irrefutable evidence, and those responsible for attacks on defense institutions will be held accountable under the law. He reassured the public that the process upholds the principles of justice.
Tarar criticized the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for politicizing the issue of military courts, accusing the party of creating an anti-country narrative for political gain. He highlighted that the PTI, which previously supported military courts, is now attempting to undermine their credibility through baseless claims. The Minister urged PTI to utilize legal remedies instead of fabricating controversies.
Reiterating the government’s commitment to the rule of law, Tarar cited Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s principle of upholding legal supremacy as a guiding force. He assured that all those responsible for the May 9 incidents would face justice in accordance with the law, ensuring transparency and adherence to legal procedures.
