NAB recovers record ‘Rs3.8 Trillion’ in one year, says chairman Nazir Ahmed

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has achieved a historic milestone, recovering Rs3.8 trillion ($13.57 billion) in a single year, according to NAB Chairman Lt Gen (retd) Nazir Ahmed. Speaking at an event marking Anti-Corruption Day, he highlighted the bureau’s exceptional performance in combating corruption and safeguarding national assets.

Since its inception, NAB has recovered Rs6.1 trillion through direct and indirect means. The chairman specifically lauded the performance of NAB Karachi, Sukkur, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

  • Karachi and Sukkur: Collectively recovered Rs2.4 trillion and Rs1.1 trillion, respectively, by reclaiming forest land spanning 1.8 million hectares.
  • KP Region: Achieved indirect and consequential savings of Rs194.9 billion.

These efforts have significantly contributed to protecting public resources and restoring assets.

NAB has processed 22,000 applications this year, with reforms leading to a reduction in false complaints from 4,000 to just 400 per month. The bureau has also launched a visitor feedback system to enhance its performance and control corruption more effectively.

Recognizing the critical role of youth in combating corruption, the chairman noted that 65% of Pakistan’s population is under 30. A public awareness program is being developed with the support of educational and research institutions to engage the youth in the anti-corruption movement.

The bureau has signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with 10 countries to expedite corruption case resolutions. In the power sector, NAB is working with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to address issues, with positive impacts expected soon.

Awards were presented to top-performing NAB officers, including Rashid Badar, Mirza Aleem Baig, and Mohsin Haroon, among others. The chairman emphasized NAB’s ongoing commitment to fighting corruption, recovering embezzled funds, and providing relief to victims in sectors like real estate.

UNODC representative Troels Vester also commended NAB’s efforts and emphasized the importance of youth participation in the global fight against corruption. With 1.2 billion young people worldwide, he highlighted their role as future leaders of the anti-corruption movement.
