Non-bailable warrants issued for PTI leaders, including CM Gandapur, in GHQ attack case

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Rawalpindi issued non-bailable arrest warrants on Saturday for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and several other Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders in connection with the May 9 attack on the General Headquarters (GHQ).

ATC Judge Amjad Ali Shah directed the Rawalpindi city police officer (CPO) to ensure the suspects, including Shibli Faraz, Shehryar Afridi, Zain Qureshi, Tahir Sadiq, and Taimoor Masood, are produced in court on December 10.

This development follows the indictment of PTI founder Imran Khan and dozens of party workers in the GHQ attack case. A total of 100 individuals, including former interior minister Sheikh Rashid, were charged in the case, which was registered at the RA Bazar Police Station. Imran Khan and others denied the charges during court proceedings.

The case, linked to the violent protests triggered by Khan’s arrest in a £190 million settlement case, has named 143 individuals as accused, with 23, including Zulfi Bukhari, Shahbaz Gill, and Murad Saeed, listed as fugitives. All accused have been barred from traveling abroad.

The May 9 riots saw PTI workers allegedly targeting military and government installations, including the Jinnah House in Lahore and the GHQ in Rawalpindi, following Khan’s arrest by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). The military declared May 9 a “Black Day” and announced that protesters involved in attacking military installations would be tried under the Army Act.

At least 70 PTI leaders have been accused of orchestrating the events and inciting workers to engage in violence. The nationwide unrest led to the arrest of hundreds of PTI members, with many senior leaders facing charges related to the attacks.
