Pakistan Opposes Proposal for New Permanent Seats in UNSC, Calls for Equitable Reform

Pakistan has voiced opposition to the proposal for adding new permanent seats to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), advocating instead for equal and accountable reforms. Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Munir Akram, highlighted the council’s challenges in addressing global threats, which he attributed to a lack of consensus among current permanent members.

Akram argued that expanding the number of permanent members would exacerbate the Security Council’s dysfunction, stating, “Adding new permanent members will deepen the dysfunctionality of the Security Council.” He emphasized that addressing global peace and security challenges requires a more inclusive and equitable approach rather than expanding permanent membership.

The issue of permanent membership in the UNSC has long been contentious since the UN’s inception, with many member states advocating for a balanced reform that reflects contemporary global realities. Pakistan’s stance underscores its call for a Security Council that is both effective and accountable, prioritizing the interests of the broader international community over increasing the influence of select countries.
