Pakistan Railways issues Rs 380 million in refunds over train delays

Pakistan Railways has refunded Rs 380 million to passengers over the past three years as compensation for train delays at originating stations, according to the Ministry of Railways. The refunds were distributed in response to passenger complaints, with Rs 33 million issued in 2023, Rs 269 million in 2022, and Rs 78 million in 2021.

To improve passenger convenience, the railway service notifies travelers of train delays through SMS alerts. Passengers are entitled to a full refund if a train is delayed by more than six hours from its departure point. Additionally, during emergencies, Pakistan Railways provides complimentary meals and makes alternative arrangements, such as road transport or rerouting of trains, to minimize inconvenience.

Despite the challenges, an official from the ministry emphasized that rail transport remains an economical and environmentally friendly option for bulk cargo and long-distance travel. It is 75% more fuel-efficient and has a significantly lower environmental impact than road transport. However, road transport continues to dominate short-distance and small cargo services due to its doorstep loading and delivery capabilities.
