Peshawar High Court grants interim bail to Omar Ayub and other PTI leaders

The Peshawar High Court (PHC) has granted interim bail to opposition leader Omar Ayub till January 8, enabling him to attend hearings in multiple legal cases filed against him in Islamabad and Punjab. The decision was made by Justice Sahibzada Asadullah, who heard Ayub’s plea, Express News reported.

Ayub’s lawyer informed the court that his client faced numerous cases and feared arrest, making it challenging to appear for hearings. Accepting the request, the court directed Ayub to present himself before the relevant courts by the deadline.

In a related development, Justice Sahibzada Asadullah also approved a 20-day interim bail for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Ameer Nayazi, who sought relief under similar circumstances. Nayazi was instructed to appear in the appropriate courts within the prescribed period.

The PHC also entertained bail requests from PTI lawmakers Shandana Gulzar, Arbab Amir Ayub, and Arbab Sheer Ali, who approached the court citing concerns over arrests following protests at D-Chowk. Their lawyer argued that cases were politically motivated, raising fears of unjust detention.

The court’s rulings come as PTI leaders face mounting legal challenges related to their political activities and protests. These developments follow a tense period marked by confrontations between PTI supporters and law enforcement agencies.

Last week, Omar Ayub issued a strong warning to the government, suggesting that the party might consider civil disobedience if justice is not served concerning the events of November 24. Speaking at a joint press conference with PTI leaders Asad Qaiser, Shibli Faraz, and others, Ayub announced the formation of a high-powered negotiation committee comprising himself, Ali Amin Gandapur, Asad Qaiser, and Hamid Raza.

Ayub accused the government of fascism, alleging that peaceful PTI protests were met with violence. He claimed that 12 unarmed protesters were killed, thousands injured, and over 200 individuals reported missing. He further alleged that US-made sniper rifles were deployed against demonstrators and that hospital morgues were emptied to conceal the scale of violence.

Demanding justice, Ayub called for an inquiry into the November 24 incidents and the release of detained PTI workers. He warned that if profiling of youth and use of force continued, the party would escalate to civil disobedience. Ayub also revealed plans for a prayer ceremony for the deceased on December 13, followed by a global prayer initiative by overseas PTI workers on December 15.

Highlighting the party’s readiness for dialogue, Ayub stated, “Our committee is open to negotiations with anyone willing to engage. We seek justice and transparency for our workers and supporters.”
