PM Shehbaz Sharif to attend D-8 summit in Egypt this week

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif will visit Egypt from December 18 to 20 to participate in the 11th Summit of the Developing Eight (D-8) countries, which will take place in Cairo. The summit, themed “Investing in Youth and Supporting SMEs: Shaping Tomorrow’s Economy,” will focus on economic growth through youth engagement and small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs).

Ahead of the main event, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar will represent Pakistan at the 21st Session of the D-8 Council of Ministers on December 18. The D-8 Organization, comprising Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey, Iran, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Nigeria, plays a significant role in promoting economic cooperation among its member states.

During the summit, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will emphasize the significance of investing in youth and SMEs as key drivers of economic growth, job creation, innovation, and entrepreneurship. He is expected to highlight Pakistan’s commitment to the D-8 ideals and stress the importance of fostering partnerships among member nations for mutual benefit. Additionally, the prime minister will underscore Pakistan’s efforts in agriculture, food security, tourism, and youth empowerment as critical pillars for sustainable economic development.

A key highlight of the prime minister’s agenda will be his participation in a Special Session addressing the humanitarian crisis and reconstruction challenges in Gaza and Lebanon. Shehbaz Sharif will reaffirm Pakistan’s principled stance on the Palestinian issue and call for peace in the Middle East, stressing the urgent need for international cooperation to address the consequences of ongoing Israeli aggression.

On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Shehbaz is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with leaders from other participating countries to discuss matters of mutual interest and strengthen diplomatic ties.
