PM Shehbaz Urges Arab-Islamic Summit to Demand Accountability for Israeli War Crimes

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for Israel’s accountability over alleged war crimes during the Arab-Islamic summit on Monday, urging the region’s leaders to support an immediate ceasefire and impose an arms embargo on Israel. Speaking to leaders gathered in Riyadh, PM Shehbaz highlighted the devastating toll of Israeli strikes in Gaza, which have reportedly killed over 40,000 Palestinians, including women and children.
“This conference must call for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and impose an immediate arms embargo on Israel,” the Prime Minister declared, urging member states to adopt concrete actions rather than issuing statements of condemnation. His comments come one year after the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) convened a similar summit, condemning Israeli actions as “barbaric.”

The Prime Minister asserted that Israel’s actions in Gaza amount to genocide, questioning the international community’s ongoing inaction amid what he described as “overlooked massacres.” He expressed concern over recent Israeli military actions against Lebanon and Iran, cautioning that such escalations could ignite a larger conflict in the region.
Shehbaz also reiterated his longstanding support for Palestinian statehood, calling for an independent Palestinian state within the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem (Quds Al-Sharif) as its capital. Additionally, he called for an end to Israel’s blockade on Gaza, emphasizing the need to ensure essential supplies, including food, water, electricity, and medical aid, reach the people of Gaza.
Calling for international accountability, PM Shehbaz advocated for implementing United Nations General Assembly emergency resolution 10/24, which includes following up on a recent advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the issue. He also urged a “comprehensive review” of Israel’s UN membership, citing the need for justice and adherence to international law.
“May our unity today be the dawn of Palestine’s freedom,” the Prime Minister said, appealing for solidarity among Arab and Islamic nations to transform words into meaningful action. His remarks reflect a growing call within the Arab-Islamic community for decisive steps to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and to support Palestinian liberation efforts.
