Punjab introduces ‘mobile app’ to monitor teacher attendance and improve accountability
In a major step toward digitizing the education sector, the Punjab Education Department has launched a mobile app designed to enhance teacher accountability and attendance across the province. This innovative initiative aims to tackle issues such as “ghost teachers”—staff members who collect salaries despite being absent from their duties—while ensuring resources are efficiently utilized.
The app uses location tracking to verify that teachers are present at their respective schools during designated working hours. By addressing the chronic problem of absenteeism, the app is expected to improve the overall efficiency and reliability of Punjab’s education system.

Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of schools have been given access to the app to perform critical tasks such as updating teacher profiles, approving temporary transfers, and implementing necessary amendments. Additionally, the app collects feedback from school heads to continuously refine and enhance the education system.
Operated by the Programme Monitoring and Implementation Unit (PMIU), the app represents the provincial government’s commitment to improving education quality. Punjab, with its 105,178 educational institutions—52,314 public and 50,054 private—stands to gain significantly from this digital transformation.
The app not only ensures teacher accountability but also supports broader efforts to modernize education management in Punjab. By focusing on transparency and engagement, the initiative seeks to maximize the impact of resources for the benefit of students, educators, and the education system as a whole. This step underscores the government’s dedication to fostering a more effective and accountable education infrastructure in the province.
