World Bank approves $240 million loan to improve Karachi’s water and sewerage services

The World Bank has approved a $240 million loan for Pakistan to enhance water and sewerage services in Karachi, marking the second phase of a project aimed at addressing the city’s long-standing water and sanitation challenges. The initiative focuses on improving water supply, treating wastewater for reuse, and fostering sustainable urban development.
World Bank Country Director Najy Benhassine stated that the project will expand investments in water distribution systems and rehabilitate Karachi’s sewerage network. By 2030, it aims to provide safe water to approximately 16 million residents and sewerage services to 7.5 million individuals, significantly improving public health and living standards.

The initiative is designed to benefit vulnerable populations, including 58% of youth aged 15-24 and over 500,000 residents of informal settlements. The World Bank emphasized the importance of addressing public health issues, including Pakistan’s malnutrition crisis, through improved access to clean water and sanitation.
A key component of the project is promoting gender equity within the water and sewerage sector. The program will create opportunities for women in technical and leadership roles, institutionalize internship programs for female graduates, and encourage the recruitment and promotion of women in utility services.
To ensure sustainable service delivery, the project will incorporate private sector participation. This collaboration aims to make Karachi’s water and sewerage services more secure and reliable in the long term.
